Thank you for your interest in the Student Sustainability Collective! The SSC is dedicated to serving the university community by providing resources, support, and space to foster an active culture of responsibility for environmental and social justice on campus and in the community. We advocate for sustainability through policy development/implementation and awareness campaigns.

The SSC was founded as a non-hierarchical commission of the Associated Students that operates with the help of student fees. We envision a socio-economically just world made of clean and healthy environments sustained through individuals and communities equitably sharing resources, responsibilities, and power.

  • If accepted for an interview, you will be able to have your interview via Zoom.

  • Must be available for weekly staff meetings (Time TBD).

Job Description for ALL SSC Director Positions:

All SSC members work in partnership to actualize SSC-wide campaigns and maintain healthy Collective dynamics through shared leadership.

TIME COMMITMENT:

  • Commitment of 15-20 hours per week at $150/week stipend 

  • Must be enrolled at UCSD full-time for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters 

  • Participate in mandatory 2-hour weekly staff meetings

  • Participate in other campaign’s events and planning

  • Attend mandatory quarterly staff orientations

  • Must be available on occasional evenings and weekends

  • Must not hold any other stipend position within AS during the duration of this position (2026-2027 academic year)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hold a voting role in decisions pertaining to operations, activities, and events including, but not limited to, budget allocations and staff hiring

  • Participate in developing internal documents and procedures of the SSC.

  • Build and maintain connections with students, staff, and faculty members who are allies to the SSC.

  • Assist in facility maintenance including, but not limited to, basic cleaning, furniture rearrangements, and supply inventory.

  • Submit quarterly and end-of-year evaluations of your collective experience to give an overall assessment of your position and provide recommendations for future improvements.

  • Complete summer coursework and reading by the beginning of the academic year in order to prepare for working as a director and to familiarize yourself with environmental and social justice issues.

PROFESSIONALISM AND COLLABORATION:

  • Bring an open mind to SSC meetings and respect community values and guidelines.

  • Fully engage in activities that facilitate holistic development, which may involve personal and emotional investments beyond job-specific duties.

  • Engage in one-on-one meetings with fellow SSC members.

  • Work with fellow directors to stay up-to-date on all collective activities and maintain accountability within the collective structure.

  • Other duties as agreed upon by the Collective.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR  OPERATIONS AND RESOURCES DIRECTOR

  1. Co-run the planning committee for Fall retreat (directors only), Winter retreat (for

directors and interns) and Spring retreat (current and future directors). 

  1. Send out blank agenda the Thursday before staff meeting every week to the SSC Slack

    1. Make sure the agenda is shared and “can edit” for directors.

  2. Take attendance for weekly staff meetings

  3. Send out weekly recaps of meeting topics and RR (residual responsibilities) to collective members after weekly meetings

  4. Manage SRC space reservations and regulate SRC calendar. 

  5. Manage the SRC student space and its resources: 

    1. SSC Library

    2. Button Maker 

    3. Displays and Posters 

    4. Sewing Machines

    5. Computers and Printers

      1. Functioning properly, stocked with paper, etc. 

    6. SRC Compost Bucket

    7. Any other materials stored in the SRC, including, but not limited to, the projector, microwave, refrigerator, and toaster

  6. Manage the official SSC email - respond to and forward emails to the Collective.

    1. Checked daily. 

  7. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the SRC cabinets, counters, storage space, etc.

    1. Communicate with other student organizations that have materials stored in the SSC 

  8. Help maintain collective accountability by creating and implementing the following: 

    1. Sending out office hour shift sign-up sheets the Friday before the shift week

    2. Sign-in sheets for office-hour shifts 

    3. Compost clean out

  9. Oversee the Climate Art Locker located in the Middle of Muir Quad. Including but not limited to:

    1. Tidying up of materials inside

    2. Replenishing any art supplies from SRC

    3. Purchasing of books/zines from local, small businesses, artists, and authors that reflect values of environmentalism, activism, radical perspectives
