Description of the Office of the Vice-President of External Affairs:
The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services, and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service to build and strengthen our community.
The Office of the Vice President of External Affairs amplifies the voices of UC San Diego Students by providing access to statewide and federal opportunities for civic engagement and community involvement. The Office collaborates with inclusive, diverse on-campus and off-campus partners to inspire emerging student leaders and changemakers, including UC-wide advocacy through the UCSA.

The University of California Student Association is the official voice of students from across the UC's system of campuses. It is our mission to advocate on behalf of current and future students for the accessibility, affordability, and quality of the University of California system. There are 5 campaign areas that we work on & prioritize every year based on student input.
Working Job Title: Legislative Director

Job Description:
- Shall serve as a co-board member to the University of California Student Association (UCSA) and sit on the Government Relations Committee (*This will require traveling at least once a month, usually Friday through Sunday)
- Shall serve as the Ex-Officio Executive Director of the Triton Lobby Corps and help co-oversee the staff and operations of the Triton Lobby Corp, which serves as the lobbying branch of the office
- Shall sit in the Government Relations Committee in UCSA and ensure UC San Diego's interests are represented as prescribed by the Vice-President of External Affairs.
- Shall co-lead the office's legislative efforts such as: organizing lobby visits, analyzing policy, recommending policy stances, and educating students on UCSA legislative priorities
- Shall carry out the campaigns voted upon at the UC Student Association through the work conducted
- Shall aid policy analysts in their policy analyses into federal and state bills and aid liaisons in drafting statements of support and opposition and establishing connections to a variety of student organizations on campus
- Shall work on getting meetings with the San Diego delegation of State Representatives and Members of Congress
- Shall have elected representatives to engage with the UC San Diego campus on student priorities
- Shall co-lead the office's legislative efforts such as: Organizing lobby visits, analyzing policy, recommending policy stances, and educating students on UCSA legislative priorities
- Shall maintain relationships with the Government and Community Relations team at the UC San Diego Office of the Chancellor
- Shall take on additional responsibilities as requested by the Vice President of External Affairs.
Job Location: In-Person (UCSD Main Campus)
Qualifications:
- You must plan to be a full-time registered student at UC San Diego for the 2025 - 2026 academic year and be available on campus.
- Must be available to travel across the state to fulfill the responsibilities as a board member of the UC Student Association.
- The ability to lead and supervise a group of staff members
- Problem-solving and conflict-management skills
- Lobbying, State and Federal government experience
Hours per week: 15-20
Special Conditions of Employment:
- You must plan to be a full-time registered student at UC San Diego for the 2025 - 2026 academic year and be available on campus.
- The Legislative Director should have exceptional leadership skills, be comfortable in lobby meetings, and have a solid understanding of state and federal legislative processes.
- Be able to virtually attend UCSA Orientation on July 12th and In Person at UCLA on July 18th-20th.
