The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego (ASUCSD) are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. Office of Communications Overview

The Office of Communications’s purpose is to create a more well-known and accessible student government by practicing active communication with the UC San Diego student body, fostering connections within the community, and increasing student engagement and participation in the advocacy efforts of the Associated Students. The office has four departments: Marketing Communications, Data Analytics, Internal Association Communications, and Strategic Communications. Each of these departments is supervised by a senior officer who oversees its staff members’ daily and weekly operations, while also working as a team within their departments and with the others, to develop content and strategies to fulfill the purpose of the office through innovative and creative practices. Additionally, everyone is trained and provided with resources to increase their professional growth, along with their personnel growth through interacting with everyone in the office and the greater A.S community.

Position Description

As the Senate Communications Officer you will work under the Strategic Communications Department or Stratcom for short. As such, you will help maintain the Association’s reputation and image, along side the Senior Strategic Communications Officer, who will work closely with you on these matters.  Furthermore, you will assist the Chief Communication’s Officer and the Association with building more transparency between the Senate and the student body, through various initiatives. Moreover, you will be expected to proactively engage with Senators prior and after Senate Meetings, at events, at scheduled meetings, and more, in order to support them with their projects and increase their individual brand image. While also, staying up to date with current events on campus. In summary, you are meant to bridge the gap between the Office of Communications and the Senate, in order to create a more well connected Association and informed student body.

Key Information

Pay rate: $65 per week

Number of Openings: 1

Job Location: In-Person (UCSD Main Campus) and Off-Site work

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the department team in creating the weekly Current Event Report.

  • Take the lead on producing the weekly Senate report section within the larger Current Events Report, with assistance from the Senior Strategic Communications Officer.

  • Build connections with Senators to cultivate a collaborative and supportive atmosphere within the Senate.

  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with Senators to develop ways to assist and support their projects and increase students' awareness of their Senators.

  • Create Senate Recap videos alongside the Social Media Officer to build awareness and transparency on Senate matters.

  • Develop materials and ideas to help convey the A.S. Mission/Purpose and its services to the student body.

  • Partner with Marketing Communications (Marcom) and Data Analytics (DA) for outreach and/or research endeavors.

  • Work to promote transparency within the Senate.

  • Be a storyteller to highlight what the Association is working on.

  • Assist in the creation of a PR action plan alongside fellow staff.

  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a full-time registered UC San Diego Undergraduate Student and available to work on campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and take the initiative to complete tasks with minimal direction.

  • Well-organized, resourceful, and able to multi-task in high-pressure situations.

  • Have relevant experience in publicity/outreach and working in large teams.

  • Possess strong leadership qualities and listening skills to work in a diverse team.
