ABOUT ASSOCIATED STUDENTS

The Associated Students of the University of California San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego undergraduate student body. ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services, and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service to build and strengthen our campus community and UCSD identity.

ABOUT THE OFFICE OF LOCAL AFFAIRS

The AS Office of Local Affairs shall work to engage in local community outreach by initiating dialogue between members of the UC San Diego community and local stakeholders. The Office shall facilitate communication between students, administrators, local and regional governments, and community members/organizations to sustain a productive relationship on local political, social, economic, and indigenous issues. The Office of Local Affairs shall work to achieve the goal of engaging local community outreach through the initiation of programs, campaigns, and advocacy efforts and work to represent the UC San Diego community in local associations across the greater San Diego community.

DUTIES OF EACH POSITION

Duties of the Coordinators of the Office of Local Affairs include but are not limited to:

  • Shall help to develop and staff events hosted by the Office of Local Affairs

  • Shall research designated areas of expertise and identify the best courses of action

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Government and Community Affairs Directors

  • Shall attend meetings, when requested, with local elected officials, leaders, legislatures, community organizations, and nonprofits

  • Shall occasionally represent ASUCSD at local community meetings or attend with the AVP of Local Affairs or the Community Affairs Director

  • Shall attend all weekly staff meetings

  • Shall meet with office leadership once per week

Advocacy Coordinator

  • Shall work closely with local stakeholders to identify and develop comprehensive advocacy strategies to address issues affecting UCSD students

  • Shall advocate for policies and regulations at the San Diego level through letters, petition, or testimony

  • Shall organize grassroots campaigns to build broad-based support for student-led initiatives

  • Shall build and maintain partnerships with local advocacy groups

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Government Affairs Director

Community Affairs Coordinator

  • Shall develop and maintain relationships with community organizations such as non-profit organizations

  • Shall collaborate with local organizations on various initiatives that benefit the UCSD community and general community

  • Shall help students connect with local resources and community organizations through events, campaigns, or initiatives

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Community Affairs Director

Community Empowerment Coordinator

  • Shall engage with UCSD students to address shared concerns

  • Shall foster collaborative relationships between UCSD students and the Office of Local Affairs, fostering a culture of empowerment

  • Shall conduct consistent outreach to UCSD students to ensure their voices are heard

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Community Affairs Director

Event Programming Coordinator

  • Shall collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to curate a calendar of events throughout the year

  • Shall plan, organize, and execute events that align with advocacy, civic engagement, community collaboration, local affairs campaigns, or local partnerships

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Community Affairs Director

Government Affairs Coordinator

  • Shall monitor legislative developments, providing regular updates to the Office of Local Affairs

  • Shall develop and maintain relationships with local representatives and legislators

  • Shall research specific policies that impact the UCSD community

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Government Affairs Director

Lobbying Coordinator

  • Shall advocate for specific policies or legislation on behalf of UCSD students

  • Shall arrange meetings between AS Local Affairs representatives and legislators or government officials

  • Shall execute lobbying days (in-person or virtually) to engage directly with legislators 

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Government Affairs Director

Urban Development Coordinator

  • Shall focus on engaging students in urban planning, development, and sustainability initiatives that affect the university and surrounding communities

  • Shall advocate for sustainable urban development policies that benefit UCSD and the greater community

  • Shall work with student organizations, university departments, and local government to promote sustainable urban development within the UCSD campus

  • Shall work on projects of their choosing in collaboration with the Government Affairs Director

TIME COMMITMENT:

Time commitment varies significantly throughout the school year based on current projects and events.

STIPEND:

$45/WEEK
