Description of the Office of the Vice-President of External Affairs:

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services, and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service to build and strengthen our community. 

The Office of the Vice President of External Affairs amplifies the voices of UC San Diego Students by providing access to statewide and federal opportunities for civic engagement and community involvement. The Office collaborates with inclusive, diverse on-campus and off-campus partners to inspire emerging student leaders and changemakers, including UC-wide advocacy through the UCSA.

Purpose of the Labor Commission

The Labor Relations Commission shall serve under the office of the Vice-President of External Affairs and act as the body of ASUCSD that is responsible for creating meaningful relationships with labor unions. The commission will provide on-campus support and support union efforts to ensure fair and just practices for union members are being maintained, and work to elevate labor rights issues through education and advocacy of undergraduate students at the University of California, San Diego.

Pay rate: $60/week

Job Description: 

  • Meet frequently with the Internal Organizing Director for the Office of External Affairs 

  • Serve as the Executive Director of the Labor Affairs Commission

  • Maintain constant  communication with unions affiliated with the University of California 

  • Organize solidarity efforts with UC unions and those surrounding our communities and Establish an Associated Students presence in union spaces 

  • Build relationships with student organizations working on union organizing and student advocacy groups

  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings for the Office of External Affairs and report on union updates and efforts

  • Fulfill any other responsibility assigned by the VP External and Internal Organizing Director

Job Location: In-Person (UCSD Main Campus)

Qualifications: 

  • Have a background in labor organizing 

  • Active Communication and organizational skills 

  • Team Leadership Experience 

  • Organizing and community-building experience

Hours per week: 15 - 20

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • You must plan to be a full-time registered student at UC San Diego for the 2024 - 2025 academic year and be available on campus.
